The one downside of Nutella, if there could be such a thing, is that it’s rather thick so you can’t use it straight away as a decoration or a dip. Furthermore, sometimes Nutella is just too solid and won’t spread evenly on pancakes, bread and the like.
Luckily, there’s an easy solution to this problem which is why today we’re showing you how to melt Nutella.
Let’s get started!

How To Melt Nutella?
There are different ways of melting Nutella, all of which are simple and easy to follow. We’ll include a brief description of each one as well as a list of materials you’ll need so you can decide which method works the best for you.
We also want to take this opportunity to remind you that microwaving an entire jar of Nutella is a very bad idea, both because it will damage the integrity of the spread if you let it cool again and because microwaving plastic containers is harmful for your health.
With that in mind, let’s continue to find out how to melt nutella:
1. How to Melt Nutella Using the “Hot Knife Method”
This is one of the simplest methods and one you should use if you’re looking to spread Nutella more easily during your breakfast or brunch.
Item Needed:
How to Melt Nutella Using the “Hot Knife Method”
- Step One: Heat your butter knife by leaving it inside your hot liquid of choice for a couple of minutes.
- Step Two: Once the knife is warm, spread Nutella as usual.
- You’ll notice that the hot knife will be able to cut through the spread more easily and will make spreading the chocolate much faster.
- If you want to save time or if you’re into multitasking, you can use your morning coffee/tea to heat up the knife. This way you’ll not only save time but you’ll also have less to clean… Plus, if you put your knife back in your cup after using this method the leftover Nutella will give your coffee a boost in flavor!
2. How to Melt Nutella Using the “Spoon Method”
This method might not work for everyone as it needs some elbow grease and patience. Because of its simplicity, this method should only be used with Nutella that’s slightly thicker than usual.
Item Needed:
- A spoon
How to Melt Nutella Using the “Spoon Method”
- Step One: Firmly grab your Nutella jar and stir it with a spoon for a while, until the heat caused by the friction starts melting the spread.
- Step Two: Enjoy!
- As you can see, this is an easy yet time consuming method so if you’re in a rush (or you simply don’t feel like working for your meal) skip to the next method.
3. How to Melt Nutella Using the “Microwave”
Yes, yes. We said that you should never heat up a Nutella jar in the microwave and we stand by it. Microwaving plastics is just a bad idea. Period.
If you really want to use your microwave, though, you should do this.
Item Needed:
- A spoon
- Microwave (you can check this list of the best microwave-toaster combo oven)
- Microwave safe plate or bowl

- Step One: Firmly grab your Nutella jar and stir it with a spoon for a while, until the heat caused by the friction starts melting the spread.
- Step Two: Place your Nutella in a microwave friendly plate or bowl.
- We recommend the bowl because it will prevent any spills but anything with raised edges will work.
- In fact, if you’re not melting a lot of Nutella then a simple plate will do the trick. - Step Three: Microwave your Nutella for 15 seconds.
- This should work for most microwaves but if you aren’t happy with the consistency of the spread simply microwave it for 10 seconds more.
- Don’t forget to stir your Nutella thoroughly once you pull it out of the oven, as this will help distribute heat evenly through the entire spread.
Not a fan of microwaves?
That’s alright, there’s one last way of melting Nutella that you should know about.
4. How to Melt Nutella Using the “Hot Bath Method”
Also called a “bain-marie”, this is one of the best methods when it comes to melting not only chocolate but just about anything that needs to be melted carefully.
The advantages of this method is that it’s gentle and won’t cause hot spots or overheat your food. The biggest disadvantage is that it takes longer than any of the previously mentioned tips, except perhaps the spoon method.
Item Needed:
- Hot water
- Large container
- Small container
- Spoon
How to Melt Nutella Using the “Hot Bath Method”
- Step One: Set the large container on your counter.
- Place a towel or a plate underneath if you want to protect the surface from the heat. - Step Two: Spoon the Nutella into the smaller container.
- You can also use the Nutella jar as the smaller container.
- However, we only recommend doing this if you plan on finishing the jar, as reheating the Nutella over and over again will change its taste. - Step Three: Place the small container (or the jar) inside the large container.
- Step Four: Pour boiling water into the large container making sure not to let any water into the small container.
- The water should come about halfway up the small container but this can change depending on how much Nutella you’re planning on melting.
- In general, just make sure the Nutella is covered without any risks of water coming in direct contact with it. - Step Five: Wait until the Nutella melts, which will take you around 5 minutes.
- This can take more or less time depending on how much Nutella you’re using so don’t forget to check every now and then. - Step Six: Stir the Nutella every now and then.
- This will help you not only make sure the Nutella is melting properly but also will help distribute the heat better through the spread. - Step Seven: Remove the small container from the water once your Nutella has the desired consistency.
